Hatteras Island Boardsports is the result of a lifelong obsession with the Outer Banks of North Carolina and specifically the village of Avon on Hatteras Island. We have been coming to Avon our entire lives for family vacations and have been pounded in the Hatteras surf since we learned to swim. We discovered early on that this quiet strip of beach is where we belonged and, although we left for college and other jobs, we always found our way back & now we’ve got a good reason to stay! We’ve designed our surf shop to share our love for the area with both locals and tourists, so whether you are a seasoned local or a leisurely summer visitor, we’ll have what you need to get the most out of Avon and Hatteras Island. Contact us with your comments or to make a reservation. Welcome to Avon!
Kevin & Debra Scalia
Owners
Kevin's grandfather built a house in Avon in the early 70's, so although Kevin was born and raised in Virginia, he spent all of his free time at his grandfather's beach house bodyboarding, surfing, and developing a love and appreciation for all things Hatteras. After many summers in Avon, he moved here full-time in 2000. Debbie is originally from Ohio, but is proof of the draw that Hatteras Island has on people from all over. Her parents made Hatteras their annual family vacation when she was young, so once she was out of college, she headed straight for the beach.
Kevin & Debbie married in 2003 and raise their two kids here on Hatteras Island.
Nita Wage
Retail Buyer, Website Operations
Nita was born and raised on Hatteras Island. In 2016, she moved to Wilmington, NC for 4 years to pursue her degree in business management and leadership at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, but continued to do the Women's buying for the shop while in school. She recently graduated in December of 2020, and after moving back to the Outer Banks, took over all retail buying for the store. Nita spends her free time searching for treasures on the beach, fishing, reading, and spending time with her dog, Ozzy.
Jake Throne
Skate/Surf Buyer, Surf Instructor
Strengths: Eating hot pockets right out of the microwave.
Weakness: Listens to the Smiths too much.
Jake was born in Kinnakeet and raised by crab people. When he's not trying to convince our boss, Kevin, not to fire him, he enjoys surfing, making his famous "Mad Sauced", and making art that a 3rd grader would be ashamed of.
Josh Thuman
Surf Instructor & Sales
Born in Maryland, Josh spends his entire summers in Avon surfing with his family. You might recognize his family driving their yellow military truck full of surfboards down highway 12 in the summer. Josh has been helping out in the shop since he was 15, and started teaching surf lessons as soon as he turned 18.
Chris Ogorman
Surf Instructor
Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Chris has been charging the waves in Hatteras since he was a kid. He has been calling Hatteras Island his home for over 10 years now. Chris's calm and easy going attitude as well as his local knowledge make him a great instructor.
